Manager: Pressure games are chance to show our quality

By: Joe Donnelly on 07 Nov, 2018 17:31

  • CELTIC face RB Leipzig in the UEFA Europa League tomorrow evening (November 8), and Brendan Rodgers well-understands the importance of the group-stage tie. With three games played in Group B so far, Celtic trail second-place Leipzig by three points and league leaders FC Salzburg by six.

Speaking to the media at Lennoxtown, the manager said he's looking forward to another entertaining European night at Paradise.

“We know it’s a tough game for us but we love playing at Celtic Park,” he said. “If we’ve any opportunity to progress, it’s a game we need to win. Not every pressure situation is a negative, though. We’ve seen the pressure moments as times to show our quality.

“It’s always a different game at Celtic Park, and our supporters push us on and help us on the night. We’ll need to be at the very highest level to get a result.”

The Hoops boss suggested there is room for improvement regarding Celtic’s away form in Europe, and that consistency is crucial – both at home and abroad.

“At this level the tempo is higher and quicker,” he said. “We’ve shown that we can do that at this level. It’s ensuring we have that consistency. Hopefully from there, we can create a platform to get a result.

“We’re very much a team that defends forward. But it’s in those moments where you can’t press, that you compact as a team together. At this level you can’t afford to be timid.

“We always have something to prove – domestically or in Europe. That’s what you’re doing as a player, a manager and in every game that you play. I think in Europe, I’m very realistic in where we’re at. That doesn’t stop us wanting to get really good results. We will fight to the very end to qualify. It’s a very good group.”
