Scott Brown's support for Celtic team-mate

By: Newsroom Staff on 10 Oct, 2018 16:31

  • SCOTT Brown is targeting a return to action with Celtic when the Premiership fixtures resume on October 20, with the Champions playing host to Hibernian.

The Celtic captain has been a frustrated spectator for the team’s two most recent games, having picked in an injury in training, albeit he enjoyed Sunday's 6-0 win over St Johsntone, but he’s back in training this week and looking forward to playing again.

Having retired from international football, this would normally have been a time for some rest and recuperation for the midfielder anyway, but he’s keen to work on getting back to full fitness.

And as the Scotland side head out to Israel for their latest Nations League match, the Celtic skipper had words of support for Leigh Griffiths, who withdrew from the international squad to focus on his fitness with Celtic.

Speaking at Lennoxtown today, Scott Brown said: “I’m feeling good. I was supposed to have a week’s holiday but I’ve been in working hard with the physio. It’s been good and I’ll be back in contention for the Hibs game

“I think I’ve got past that stage of missing being with the international team. I’m happy with what I done for Scotland and I think I retired at the right time because the new lads are coming through and doing well.

“I think it’s brave of Leigh to do that (withdraw from squad). If he’s going away with Scotland, he might not get the game-time he’d expect and the training wouldn’t be as hard because of the two games coming up. so he wants to get in and be as sharp as we can for the Hibs game coming up.

“Scotland and Celtic need Leigh as fit as he possibly can be for the whole season and I think he’s done the best thing possible for himself. When he’s fit, he’s the best striker in Scotland by far.”
