Manager: Bhoys will be at their best for Hearts game

By: Tony Connelly on 09 Aug, 2018 18:31

  • BRENDAN Rodgers said his aim will be to bring the best possible football to Celtic supporters when the Scottish champions travel to Tynecastle this Saturday (August 11) to face Hearts in the Scottish Premiership.

The pursuit for an eighth consecutive league title got off to a winning start last weekend in the season opener when Celtic defeated Livingston 3-1 at Paradise on Flag Day.

The Hoops were frustratingly held to a 1-1 draw with AEK Athens last night in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League third qualifying round tie in Glasgow, but before the tie is decided in the Greek capital on Tuesday night, Celtic will return to domestic action in the Scottish Premiership with a difficult game against Craig Leven’s Hearts’ in the capital.

Speaking to the media at Lennoxtown today (Thursday), the manager discussed Saturday’s game and what his side will set out to achieve.

“I don’t know Craig that well but in my meetings with him I’ve enjoyed our short discussions,” he said. “He’s put together a competitive team.

"I’m sure the grass will be long, I’ll anticipate it, but like we showed the last time, you have to play what’s in front of you or below you at your feet, and the job is to get three points. I’m a football fan so I love to see teams winning and good football. You can only really say what I said when you win. When you lose you have to keep your mouth closed and walk on.

“For me, it’s about football and bringing the best football game to the supporters. That won’t change with me. It’ll be a tough game for us, a tough team to play but we go there looking to get three points.”

The competitive games have been coming thick and fast for the Bhoys who have already navigated two rounds of Champions League qualification at the onset of the season. With a difficult tie in Athens just three days after the Hearts game, Celtic will face a big week in the early part of their season.

“We have to look at it," he said. "We have to consider heat and everything out there. We have to look at the squad and look at the players that are robust and need to come out with Tuesday in mind, but we’ll always pick a team to get a result.”
