McGregor: Celts can break down AEK Athens in return leg

By: Tony Connelly on 09 Aug, 2018 09:31

  • CALLUM McGregor summed up the mood in the Hoops dressing as ‘disappointed’ following the 1-1 draw with AEK Athens last night (Wednesday), but he insisted that Celtic showed they were more than capable of causing the Greek champions problems in Athens next week.

McGregor scored another important goal on the big stage when he fired Celtic ahead early in the first-half with a fine finish inside the box.

The Scottish champions piled the pressure on AEK throughout the remainder of the half but the visitors snatched an equaliser just before the break after Victor Klonaridis was given time and space inside the box to blast the ball beyond Craig Gordon.

The Greek side were reduced to 10 men early in the second half but managed to keep Celtic at bay and come away with the draw. McGregor admitted Celtic were frustrated by the result but added they could take confidence in how dominant they were in attack throughout the 90 minutes.

“Naturally we’re disappointed because we didn’t win the game,” said the 25-year-old. “We had 10 men for half an hour but we didn’t break them down.

“It might look a bit flat but the players need to stay positive and believe that we can go over there and get a result. Over the past couple of seasons, you’ve seen how we’ve been tested and come through. We know how big task it is but we’ll definitely be ready for it.

“When you go through the rounds, the standard goes up and you play against better teams with better organisation and better players. You see that they never had much in the game but they get that chance and got a goal.

“As you go through the rounds, that ruthless side of teams is there. They got one chance and scored. We have to defend better when we’re out there. If they score it’s difficult for us but we’re still positive that we can go over there and cause problems.”

Last season McGregor was the only Celt to score in every competition and his goal at Paradise against AEK Athens continued his impressive goal scoring record in important games. The Scotland internationalist is confident that he could do the same in Athens next week in the return leg.

“It would be massive to get a goal over there,” he said. “We know what we need to do to go through and the players will be in no doubt. We have a big game on Saturday but I think when the game comes around next Tuesday then players are in no doubt how big the game is.

“If I get a chance I’ve shown I can finish them. It’s just about us trying to be positive and get on the front foot and if a chance comes my way I’ll stick it away.”
