  • Kristoffer Ajer: Celts will be prepared for Rosenborg test

Kristoffer Ajer: Celts will be prepared for Rosenborg test

By: Tony Connelly on 20 Jul, 2018 09:31

  • KRISTOFFER Ajer is well aware of the threat which Rosenborg pose in the next round of UEFA Champions League qualification and knows that Celtic will have to be on form to see off their Norwegian opponents again.

Brendan Rodgers’ side booked their place in the second round of Champions League qualification with another 3-0 win over Alashkert which took the aggregate score to 6-0. The Hoops will now meet Norwegian side Rosenborg for the second time in two years in the next round.

A James Forrest goal was all that separated the two sides over the course of the two legs last season and Ajer anticipates a similarly difficult tie this time round.

“Rosenborg, as we saw last year, are a tough opponent with a lot of quality players so I’m sure it’ll be a tough game home and away," Celtic's Norwegian defender said. “When you play Champions League qualifiers you come up against quality opponents and I know Rosenborg well.

“Last year they beat Ajax in the last round of the Europa League qualification to go through so they can really hurt you if you’re not 100 per cent up for the game. We know that and when they come here next week we’ll hopefully put in a top performance because they are a great team.

“I like going home,” he added. “It will be nice to get back to Norway but I play for Celtic and I’m just looking forward to the two games now. Rosenborg have always been a top team in Norway and when they played in Europe you always looked to see how they were doing.

“They're a typical Scandinavian team who are well-organised and have a good squad. I think that’s probably their biggest strength. They have many good players. I know their centre-half really well. I played with one of them in the national team, and they have a really good back four.

“It’s another European game for Celtic and another tough game. For me to be able to hopefully play in those games, if the gaffer selects me, is another big game for me to get experience and hopefully play well.

“Rosenborg will come and make it difficult for us. It will be a tight game and they’ll be a good side but we will be well-prepared."
