Scott Brown: We're delighted to have made football history

By: Paul Cuddihy on 20 May, 2018 17:21

  • IT was an emotional end to a special weekend for Scott Brown as, just 24 hours after lifting the Scottish Cup to become a Double Treble-winning Celtic captain, he was the centre of attention as Celtic Park played host to his testimonial match against the Republic of Ireland.

At a packed Paradise, Brendan Rodgers’ Hoops side drew 2-2 with Martin O’Neill’s Irish team, with Leigh Griffiths and Patrick Roberts scoring the goals for Celtic in a game which also featured a cameo performance from the Magnificent Seven – Henrik Larsson.

And speaking after the game, Scott Brown admitted that he’s looking forward to a well-earned break before pre-season preparations kick off.

“When I first signed for Celtic back in 2007, my aim was just to try and get into the team,” he admitted, “because when I came, it was a great team and we had always struggled against Celtic when I played for Hibs.

“We had a good team but Celtic had some exceptional players, so it was just a case of trying to get into the team and play my way in after pre-season. Lucky enough for me, after nearly 11 years, I’m still digging my heels in and still playing.

“I feel probably just as fit as I ever have done. I don’t think a few years ago I could have played two games in two days, but for me, it’s about looking after my body now, coming back for pre-season as fit as I possibly can, and keep pushing until these legs eventually give up!

“When people come here, they don’t expect the fans to turn up week in, week out, and for us to be winning two or three trophies every season – that’s why people come here, to win trophies and to be remembered and go down in the history books and this bunch of lads have.”

And while some supporters are already looking forward to the bid for a Treble Treble, the Celtic captain explained that the squad whill, as always, take it one step at a time.

“We want to take the time now to re-charge the batteries and then we’ll be ready to go again,” he said. “It’ll be hard work but we’ll need to better than what we have done this season. We know we can push on again.

“We’ll just take it one step at a time. We’ll have Champions League qualifiers when we come back, and we need to try and make sure we get back there, because that’s where this club belongs, and where the fans deserve to be.”
