  • Scott Brown: Double Treble was for the fans

Scott Brown: Double Treble was for the fans

By: Paul Cuddihy on 20 May, 2018 12:01

  • LIFTING trophies for Celtic is something that Scott Brown will never tire of doing. Celtic’s Scottish Cup victory on Saturday was the midfielder’s 16th trophy triumph as a Celt, most of them wearing the captain’s armband.

And what made this latest success even more special was the fact that it confirmed Celtic as Double Treble winners – a feat never before achieved in the history of Scottish football.

It was the perfect start to what will be a special weekend for the Celtic captain, who is being honoured with a testimonial match against the Republic of Ireland in recognition of his many years of faithful service to the club.

And it also capped what has been a very impressive season for the 32-year-old who, as well as lifting all three domestic trophies for the second season in a row, also picked up every Player of the Year award up for grabs. For Brown, though, as always, it’s all about team honours.

“We love it just as much as the fans do, and it means so much to us to lift that trophy for them,” he said. “It puts a smile on everyone’s face.

“The awards for myself don’t really matter but to lift the Scottish Cup at the end of the season and become a Double Treble winner, and to see the fans celebrating and the lads celebrating, is brilliant. It shows just how hard everyone in that dressing room has worked all season long.

“Hampden’s been a very special place for us in the past couple of years. The attitude always has to be right, especially in a cup final. We knew that Motherwell were going to make it hard for us – they’re very long and very direct – but we managed to deal with that quite well on Saturday.

“We’ve really kicked on, fitness-wise, and football-wise as well, and that pretty much all due to the gaffer.”
