Captain is a treble winner at Celtic Player of the Year event

By: Newsroom Staff on 23 Apr, 2018 09:50

  • THERE was a night of celebration at the weekend at the club’s annual Player of the Year Awards, as supporters gathered in a Glasgow hotel to pay tribute to Brendan Rodgers’ team, who have ensured it has been another memorable season, with much more to anticipate between now and the end of the season.

And in this, his testimonial year, it was fitting that Scott Brown was the man of the night, picking up three of the awards.

The Celtic captain was a clear winner in the prestigious Player of the Year category, an award sponsored by Dafabet and voted for by Celtic supporters.

He also came out on top in the Players’ Player of the Year category, sponsored by Eden Mill St Andrews, proving not only his popularity but his importance within the dressing-room.

And this year’s Special Recognition Award, sponsored by Light Nightclub in Glasgow, was also given to the 32-year-old midfielder, who has been an inspirational figure on and off the park at Celtic for nearly 11 years now.

He has made 469 appearances for the Hoops, winning seven league titles, with an eighth hopefully on its way this weekend, while he has also won three Scottish Cups and three League Cups.

And at the end of this season, on Sunday, May 20, a testimonial match between Celtic and Martin O’Neill’s Republic of Ireland side will honour Scott Brown.

Running the Celtic captain a close second in terms of awards was Kieran Tierney, who was voted Young Player of the Year by supporters for a second consecutive season, an award sponsored by the Scottish Centre for excellence in Dentistry and PWR Pack.

And his blistering 40-yard strike against Kilmarnock at Paradise in a 5-0 League Cup victory back in August was voted by supporters as Goal of the Season, the award sponsored by Magners.

Celtic midfielder, Natalie Ross, was a popular winner of the Women’s Player of the Year, sponsored by Eden Mill St Andrews, while Anthony Ralston picked up the Academy Player of the Year Award, sponsored by Nixon Consultants.

And Scott Sinclair pipped his striking rivals to lift the Top Goalscorer of the Year Award, sponsored by Ladbrokes.

There was also musical entertainment on the night in the shape of Toy Tin Soldier, while the manager and the first-team squad got up on stage at the end of the event to lead the crowd in a rousing rendition of You’ll Never Walk Alone.
