Manager: We showed an edge in superb semi-final win

By: Tony Connelly on 15 Apr, 2018 18:29

  • BRENDAN Rodgers praised his players for their dominant performance in today's Scottish Cup semi-final win which extended his unbeaten run against Rangers to 10-in-a-row.

Celtic reaffirmed their dominance over Rangers with a hugely impressive 4-0 win thanks to goals from Tom Rogic, Callum McGregor, Moussa Dembele and Olivier Ntcham.

Speaking to the media following the game, the manager spoke highly of how his side handled the weight of expectation coming into another crucial semi-final.

“It was a very good game,” he said. “I think semi-finals are there to win and if you can play well, then great. Our idea is always to play well, and I thought in the first half we were really dominant, in control and scored two good goals, so I’m very pleased.

“I think we played well today and had a real edge to our game. We pressed it well and deserved to get to the final.”

It was amongst Celtic’s most dominant performances of the season so far and, while Brendan Rodgers maintains his side always looked to boss their opponents, he gave credit to the players for finding another level on the big occasion.

“We play so many games and we’re not always going to be at our best,” he said. “But I think this season we’ve had a number of really good performances.

“Certainly in the big games we’ve had the edge that we look for. What the players have done these last couple of seasons is really inspire the supporters to believe that they can actually achieve sometimes the impossible.

“We’re focused and geared up for all our games but when you get to these games you know what’s at stake.”

Under the leadership of Brendan Rodgers Celtic are now unbeaten in 10 consecutive games against the Ibrox side. The manager said winning in big games such as a Scottish Cup semi-final was a personal highlight for him in the context of the fixture.

“They’re all very special in their own way,” he said. “Knowing what these games are about, and knowing how tense and edgy they can be, always makes them special occasions.

“Every game has been different and I’ve enjoyed every single one. When you get to the semi-final stage and you win, and there’s something on the end of it, then of course it can make it extra special. They’re all great wins and it’s a brilliant day for the supporters.”

With their place now secured in next month's Scottish Cup final, Brendan Rodgers said Celtic must ready themselves for what he anticipates will be another difficult game against Motherwell.

“We’re in the final now and that won’t be an easy game,” he said. “That’s two cup finals we’ll now be playing them in. That’s a totally different game as well.

“Motherwell have good physicality, they’re a very honest team and they work very hard. We know when we turn up and play it gives us a great chance.”
