  • German striker nets Celtic's 1,000th goal

German striker nets Celtic's 1,000th goal

By: Newsroom Staff on 29 Mar, 2018 16:42

  • JOSEPHINE Giard’s first goal in the recent 3-0 SWPL Cup win over Hamilton Accies not only put the Hoops on the road to the semi-final of the tournament. It was also the 1,000th goal in all competitions since the women’s team was established back in 2007.

The German striker’s 38th-minute header was also her first goal for Celtic since she joined for the 2018 season, and it helped to maintain the team’s unbeaten start to the season.

And the 22-year-old was surprised and delighted to hear about the historic significance of her goal. Speaking to the Celtic View, she said: “I feel honoured to have scored the 1,000th goal. When I headed the ball and turned around to watch it, it felt like the ball was in the air for ages before hitting the target. But when it finally did, I felt very happy.”

Manager David Haley was also delighted that his new striker had got off the mark with her first goals in Celtic colours – she added another in the same game – saying: “I’m really pleased for Josephine that she was able to get herself on the scoresheet and also to get such a momentous goal for the Club.

“It’s been difficult for her because I feel that she is working hard enough and been in really good positions to get goals, but the woodwork and good goalkeeping had kept her at bay.

“She will only improve as time goes on due to getting to know the squad more, and I am very confident that we will see her on the scoresheet more and more.

“The partnership that she is creating with Nicole Pullar will continue to grow also. Nic has been great since Josi came in and has really helped Josi settling in, showing her what runs she likes and how they can work together.”

The Celtic Women’s team return to action on Sunday, April 15, with a league game away to Hamilton at the SuperSeal Stadium (KO: 4pm)
