  • Celtic Women's team sign German striker, Josephine Giard

Celtic Women's team sign German striker, Josephine Giard

By: Paul Cuddihy on 23 Feb, 2018 11:31

  • CELTIC Women’s team have moved to strengthen their attacking options with the signing of German forward, Josephine Giard.

The 21-year-old has made the move to Glasgow from her former club, FSV Gutersloh, for the 2018 season, and having already enjoyed her first training session with her new Celtic team-mates, she can’t wait to pull on the Hoops in earnest.

Speaking exclusively to the official Celtic website, Josephine spoke of her delight at having joined the club.

“This is a big move for me and it’s the first time I’ve played football for a club outside of Germany,” she said. “Celtic is a very big club and, for me, it’s very impressive because my previous club, Gutersloh, was much smaller with just some women playing. Now, here at Celtic, there is obviously the men’s team as well as the women’s team.

“I have always wanted to play at the highest level that I can, so joining Celtic is a step-up for me and an opportunity this year for me to get even better.”

Josephine, who will also be continuing with her degree studies in molecular biotechnology while in Scotland, could be in line to make her Celtic debut as early as this Sunday when the Hoops take on St Johnstone in the SPWL Cup.

And manager David Haley is hoping that the additional firepower that the German striker brings to the squad will help launch them on the road to the final.

“Josephine’s a goalscorer, while her movement and link-up play is good,” he said. “She’s powerful and strong, and she does have an eye for goal, which is what we need and is what we’ve maybe been missing over the past couple of seasons.

“She’s one of those six-yard box strikers, so hopefully she’ll be able to get on the end of things.

“It’s a boost for everybody, with a new signing after the first couple of games in the season. The way we’ve been playing this season is with one up top, and this gives us the option to go with two up top. Competition for places is always good for the squad.”

Celtic Women's team are in action against St Johnstone in the SWPL Cup this Sunday, February 25 (KO: 2pm). Get along to the K-Park Training Academy in East Kilbride and cheer on the Hoops.
