Captain: We didn't perform to our normal standards

By: Tony Connelly on 04 Feb, 2018 08:00

  • SCOTT Brown couldn't disguise his disappointment following Celtic's 1-0 loss away to Kilmarnock as the skipper conceded the Bhoys failed to fire at Rugby Park.

A well-organised home side side subjected the champions to only their second-ever Scottish Premiership loss under Brendan Rodgers.

A second-half goal from Kilmarnock midfielder Youssouf Mulumbu was all that separated the sides on an afternoon where both Dedryck Boyata and Kristoffer Ajer had to come off with injuries.

Speaking to the media following the game, Brown, said: “It wasn’t our best performance this afternoon. They defended quite well, made it hard for us and we couldn’t get then chances we would have liked at the end of the day.

“It’s always hard, they sat quite deep with a lot of men behind the ball and tried to counter attack, and we never dealt with it as well as we should have done.

“They’re always trying to do different things to try and beat us because we did so well last season. But it’s one of those ones, they’re just delighted to get the win and we’re very, very disappointed.”

Brown also commented on the injuries sustained on the artificial surface to Boyata and Ajer, but he was adamant that the Hoops squad had the strength in depth to cope with any potential lay-offs.

"We were probably on top at that time before you get your two centre-halves injured," said the captain. "It’s always hard when you get players injured during games, especially with the height and pace of them at the back. It kind of changed the momentum for us.

“The pitch never helps. They’re probably a little bit more used to it than what we are but it’s what you have to deal with.

“We have a huge squad so we’ll just need to deal with the injuries. That’s just part and parcel of football.”
