Forrest: Five-star showing a great way to resume action

By: Tony Connelly on 21 Jan, 2018 09:00

  • JAMES Forrest said Celtic will reap the rewards of the winter break following their win over Brechin City in the Scottish Cup, and he reckons the team are now raring to go for the second half of the season.

Brendan Rodgers' side eased to a 5-0 victory over Brechin City in the fourth round of the Scottish Cup on Saturday - their first game of 2018 following the winter break.

Having had such a packed schedule in the first half of the season, including nine games in December, the break came at a perfect time for the Hoops.

Forrest, who opened the scoring in the 5-0 win, believes the benefits of the rest period will become evident as the remainder of the season unfolds.

Speaking to the media following the game, he said: “It’s a great start back, scoring five goals and keeping a clean sheet. The most important thing is we’re into the next round.

“I think we kept the ball right from the start and I scored with my first touch. That was great for me and great for the team to get going so early in the game.

“We’ve had a wee break and the last couple weeks have been hard training. We were raring to go and it was a good game to start back. We start back in the league on Tuesday and hopefully we get a good result then.

“With the amount of games we were playing everyone was looking forward to the break and now we can kick on," continued the Scotland internationalist.

"I think it was really beneficial and time will tell with the games coming up.

“We feel mentally refreshed as well as physically. so that’s a big part of it as well. It is hard but we’re back now and everyone is raring to go for the remainder of the season.

Odsonne Edouard rounded off proceedings against Brechin with the fifth and final goal of the game. And Forrest spoke highly of the French striker and he was confident that the best is yet to come from the 20 year old..

“I’ve really enjoyed playing with Odsonne,” said the wide-man. “He’s good at holding the ball up, which is good for wingers and attacking players looking to link up.

“He’s been great since he came in and it’s good that he got his goal as well, that will give him confidence.

"The manager’s shown confidence in him and he’s played him in big games. Since he’s come in, he’s improved. He’s playing more games now, he’s fitted in well and he's only going to get better.”
