Winger: We wanted to send the Celtic fans home happy

By: Mark Henderson on 24 Dec, 2017 08:00

  • JONNY Hayes insists helping Celtic collect three points against Aberdeen on Saturday was more important for him than scoring his first goal for the club.

The Irishman found the net against his former employers in the 69th minute to double the Hoops’ advantage in Paradise after Mikael Lustig had broken the deadlock five minutes before the break.

Olivier Ntcham underlined the Scottish treble-winners’ dominance, particularly in the second half, by rounding Joe Lewis and slotting home.

It was an impressive performance from Brendan Rodgers’ side in front of sell-out in Paradise and it sent them eight points clear at the top of the table – the perfect early Christmas present for the Celtic support.

"It was tight in the first half as Aberdeen set their stall out to make it a difficult, physical game," said Hayes. "It was a tale of two halves today. The first half was a physical battle and in the second half we showed how good we are on the ball and at keeping possession, and we could have scored a couple more.

“To be honest, it was more about the three points today. I know it’s a cliché but we have that togetherness and experience in that dressing room. Regardless of whether you are playing or not, everyone wants each other to do well and getting three points today was the most important thing coming up to Christmas.

“The manager said he wanted us to send a full-house home happy before Christmas and also to establish a lead at the top.”
