Tierney: Record-chasing Celts will face tough test in Perth

By: Mark Henderson on 03 Nov, 2017 13:01

  • KIERAN Tierney knows Celtic will have a difficult test away to St Johnstone in Saturday's lunchtime kick-off as the Scottish treble-winners aim to make history and extend their domestic unbeaten run to 63 games.

The 20-year-old started that record-equalling sequence against Motherwell on the final day of the 2015/16 season when he broke the deadlock in the 7-0 thumping of the Steelmen. It was a memorable day for the left-back as he celebrated opening his account for the club as the Hoops lifted their fifth league title in a row.

But the Scotland internationalist admits he could never have imagined that it would be the starting point in an incredible run of results which saw Brendan Rodgers’ side match the record set by Willie Maley’s Celtic team back in 1917.

“You never think like that,” he said. “It was a great day as it was Trophy Day and for me to get my first professional goal and to start this run was great. It was my first goal and on my right foot as well. I don’t score much of them so I will remember that for a while.

“It’s a great run and some achievement from the boys to go that long. It’s been great for us but we have not set out to break any run or record. We have set out to play the way we play, to work hard and press high, and we go out there to get the win in every game, so we will look forward to Saturday.

“It will be a tough game,” he added of the St Johnstone match. “They gave us a tough game at Celtic Park. We're training hard for them and we're looking forward to the game and playing our way.

“They have a lot of good players and the last time we played, Aaron Comrie did well. I grew up with him in the Academy and he’s a great player.”
