Young Celts begin defence of SFA Youth Cup against Alloa

By: Tony Connelly on 10 Oct, 2017 14:31

  • CELTIC’s development squad have been drawn against Alloa Athletic in the third round of the Scottish FA Youth Cup.

Tommy McIntyre’s team will begin the defence of the trophy in an away tie against the Wasps as the young Hoops attempt to win the under-20 competition for a record 16th time.

Last season the Development Squad produced a dominant display in the final at Hampden to defeat Rangers 3-0 with Calvin Miller, who has since gone on to make two competitive appearances for the first-team this season, among the goal scorers.

The tournament has served as a proving ground for many current Celtic stars including Kieran Tierney and Callum McGregor, who lifted the trophy four times while progressing through the Celtic Academy system.

Celtic will go into the tournament high in confidence having already clinched silverware earlier in the season with a 7-0 victory over Albion Rovers in the final of the Jock Stein Friendship Cup in August. Since then the team have won both fixtures in the SPFL Development League with a 4-0 victory over Falkirk and a 2-0 win against Hearts.

The young Celts also recently impressed in the UEFA Youth League when they defeated Anderlecht’s youth team 2-1 in Belgium thanks to goals from Mikey Johnston and captain Regan Hendry.

The date and venue for the third round fixture against Alloa Athletic will be announced when the details have been confirmed.
