Manager: Young Celts will thrive on Euro stage

By: Mark Henderson in Brussels on 27 Sep, 2017 13:53

  • BRENDAN Rodgers believes it’s vital Celtic’s young players have the opportunity to test their talents in the UEFA Youth League as the Bhoys prepare for their second group game later today against Anderlecht.

Tommy McIntyre's team started their group campaign with an impressive performance in their 3-2 defeat to Paris Saint-Germain, with Regan Hendry and Jack Aitchison on the scoresheet.

And this time around they will be aiming to attain those high standards again but also collect some tangible reward for their efforts.

“I liked the identity of the team and how they wanted to play and how they wanted to press,” said the manager “They were aggressive, and they scored very good goals, in particular Jack Aitchison’s, which came from a sequence of passes, being aggressive and playing forward yet having patience at the same time.

“They were very good tactically in the game. These games are about education and development and it was clear that the team and the squad are doing that.”

“It’s very important, because they are playing against faster teams, and technically and tactically better ones, in the main, so that means you have to work harder at everything you do in the game,” he continued. “When you play for the first team, that’s what it’s about, every game is like that.

"It’s great for Tommy McIntyre, Shaun Maloney and the coaches, as they have clearly done very good work with the players and they are coming along very well."

Celtic U19s will face Anderlecht today at the Van Roy Stadium. Kick-off is 3pm (Celtic Park time).
