Dembele returns to goalscoring action as Celtic make it 55 unbeaten

    Celtic Park, Glasgow

    (Rogic 13, Dembele 41, Forrest 51, 73)

MOUSSA Dembele made a triumphant return to action as he scored a wonderful goal that helped Celtic defeat Ross County 4-0 in a convincing victory which cemented the Hoops' place at the top of the Premiership. It also means that Brendan Rodgers' side have now extended their unbeaten domestic run to an incredible 55 games.

Tom Rogic scored the first of the afternoon with a fantastic shot that found the bottom corner. Dembele then doubled Celtic’s lead just before half-time when he curled the ball past Aaron McCarey from outside the box. James Forrest added a double after the break to emphasise Celtic's dominance.

Dembele, who scored 32 goals for the Hoops last season, started his first game since the 4-0 win over Linfield at Paradise in the second round of the UEFA Champions League qualifiers, partnering Leigh Griffiths up front in a starting XI which had five changes to the side which started against Paris Saint-Germain last Tuesday night.

Facing a five-man defence, Celtic showed great patience in their attacking intent, with Jozo Simunovic having the first opportunity of the game inside the first five minutes with a shot that went just wide of the target. But id didn't take long for the opening goal to come after 13 minutes.

James Forrest’s initial cross into the box for Dembele was cleared back out to the winger, who slotted the ball to Rogic. His quick footwork opened enough space on the edge of the box for a chance, and his low shot beat the County keeper at his near post.

It was one-way traffic for most of the first-half, with Celtic pushing forward at every opportunity, and on 39 minutes Anthony Ralston was inches away from claiming the second goal of his senior career when his shot from distance rattled off the post.

But Dembele soon ensured the Hoops had their second with a beautifully-placed shot from the edge of the box. With a drop of the shoulder, the 21-year-old created enough space to shoot and his effort found the bottom far corner of the net.

Ross County reverted to a back four for the start of the second-half, and showed more attacking intent as they sough a way back into the game, and Craig Gordon made a fantastic double save to deny substitute Craig Curran and then Michael Gardyne, the Scottish internationalist pushing the ball over the bar from the latter's effort.

Just minutes later, it was 3-0 to Celtic. The Hoops caught Ross County on the counter-attack as Armstrong broke forward with the ball before passing to Rogic. His shot from the edge of the box was saved but Forrest was on hand to finish. And Forrest scored his second of the afternoon on 73 minutes, cutting inside and firing home a powerful left-foot shot.

Celtic continued to create further chances, with Scott Sinclair, on as a substitute for Griffiths, denied by the County keeper on a couple of occasions.

The Hoops now travel to Dens Park to face Dundee in the League Cup on Wednesday night before returning to league action against Rangers next weekend.
