Hat-trick hero McGregor starts for Celts in Trondheim

By: Mark Henderson in Trondheim on 02 Aug, 2017 18:30

  • FRESH from scoring a superb hat-trick in Saturday’s 5-0 success in Sunderland, Callum McGregor will start for Celtic in tonight’s UEFA Champions League qualifier away to Rosenborg in one of three changes to the team who were held by the Norwegian side last week in Paradise.

The 24-year-old will operate in the same advanced midfield role that saw him do so much damage at the Stadium of Light, with captain Scott Brown and Stuart Armstrong operating behind him.

Erik Sviatchenko has recovered from injury and will take his place in central defence alongside Jozo Simunovic, while Jonny Hayes, who also found the net on Wearside, comes in on the right flank. After leading the line so impressively against Sunderland, James Forrest will continue to fill that position.

Kristoffer Ajer, Olivier Ntcham and Tom Rogic are the three players to drop out, with Ntcham and Rogic named among the substitutes. Leigh Griffiths will also start from the bench, having recovered from the calf injury, which ruled him out of the first-leg.

Following last week’s goal-less draw at Celtic Park, the UEFA Champions League third qualifying round tie is evenly poised as Brendan Rodgers side target a place in play-off round of the competition – the final hurdle before the group stages.

Kick-off at the Lerkendal Stadion is 7.45pm (Celtic Park time), and head to @celticfc for all the pre-game build-up and live match updates as the Bhoys aim to maintain their Champions League adventure this seaon.

CELTIC (4-2-3-1) Gordon; Lustig, Simunovic, Sviatchenko, Tierney; Brown, Armstrong; Hayes, McGregor, Sinclair; Forrest
Subs: De Vries, Bitton, Griffiths, Gamboa, Rogic, Ntcham, Kouassi
