Stylish Celts put Shamrock Rovers to the sword in Dublin

DUBLIN Bhoy Jonny Hayes grabbed his first goal for the Hoops as Celtic cruised to victory at the Tallaght Stadium in Ireland. There were plenty of positives for Brendan Rodgers as his side now turn their attentions to Friday’s UEFA Champions League second qualifying round match away to Linfield.

The manager had made three changes to his team following the draw against Slavia Prague on Tuesday night. Moussa Dembele, Stuart Armstrong and Erik Sviatchenko started in place of Leigh Griffiths, Callum McGregor and the injured Dedryck Boyata.

It was the Irish side who threatened first inside the opening minute when Boyd broke clear down the middle from a set-piece. His header, however, fell wide of the post.

Celtic, who donned their new away kit for the first time, came into the contest three minutes later. James Forrest danced past two players before his effort curved off target. At the other end, Craig Gordon had to be alert to produce a superb save after Boyd ambitiously struck at goal from the centre circle.

But the next opportunity fell to the Hoops and this time the Bhoys made no mistake. After a dazzling piece of wing-play from Forrest, he found Mikael Lustig inside the box who tucked the ball away with ease.

The Hoops kept up the pressure and gave the massed ranks of green-and-white inside the ground more to celebrate in the 23rd minute when Armstrong finished well from inside the box.

The Scottish champions kept up the high tempo and deservedly grabbed the third in the 28th minute. Following some lovely attacking work from Tom Rogic, Scott Sinclair and Kieran Tierney, the left-back cut the ball back to Dembele who tapped in from close-range.

And Tierney was the supplier again just over ten minutes later, this time crossing to Sinclair inside the six-yard box gifting Celtic a four-goal lead going into the break.

Dembele continued where he left off as the second-half got underway, forcing Horgan to be on his toes five minutes after the restart. The Frenchman’s volley went astray, though.

The lively Forrest then made it five for the Celts. After taking the ball past a number of men in the Shamrock box, the winger placed the ball perfectly in the bottom corner.  In the 66th minute, Celtic grabbed their sixth. Sinclair tapped the ball home after dribbling past Horgan in the one-on-one .

Almost immediately after Sinclair’s goal, Rogic and Armstrong combined well to add to their team’s tally.  As the game reached its conclusion, substitute Hayes was next to get his name on the scoresheet. The Dublin Bhoy finished emphatically following Sinclair’s cross to net his first goal for the Hoops.

And that wasn’t the last of the goals for the Celts. More tricky play from Sinclair helped Rogic to his first of the match, the Australian heading home a wonderfully-delivered cross from Celtic’s Player of the Year in the 86th minute to make it 9-0.

CELTIC (4-3-3): Gordon (de Vries 62); Lustig, Simunovic (McGregor 72), Sviatchenko, Tierney (Izaguirre 62); Brown (Bitton 32), Armstrong, Rogic; Forrest (Hayes 62), Sinclair, Dembele (Griffiths 62).
Not Used: Hazard, McCart, Henderson, Mackay-Steven.
