Invincibles kick off bid for seven-in-a-row with home game v Hearts

By: Newsroom Staff on 23 Jun, 2017 09:00

  • CELTIC will kick off the defence of their title and the bid for seven-in-a-row with a home game against Hearts on the opening weekend of the SPFL Premiership season.

Brendan Rodgers’ Invincibles signed off last season’s incredible league campaign with a 2-0 win over Hearts at Celtic Park before lifting the Premiership trophy. Now, the Edinburgh side will return to Paradise for Flag Day on the weekend of August 5.

It’s the second season in a row that Celtic have faced Hearts in their opening league fixture, with James Forrest and Scott Sinclair scoring in a 2-1 win at Tynecastle last year.

Following the Flag Day opener against Hearts, the Hoops will then face their first Glasgow derby of the season when they travel to Firhill to take on Partick Thistle. And August’s fixtures are completed with an away game against Kilmarnock followed by the visit of St Johnstone to Celtic Park.

Scotland’s top two sides don’t meet until October 25 when the Hoops travel to Pittodrie to take on Aberdeen, while the sides also meet at Celtic Park two days before Christmas

Towards the end of September, Celtic will travel to Ibrox for the first visit to the stadium since the 5-1 thrashing of Rangers there at the end of April, while the last fixture of 2017 on December 30 will see Pedro Caixinha bring his side to Paradise, which also witnessed a 5-1 demolition derby triumph for Brendan Rodgers’ side last season.

And September 30 will see Neil Lennon make a welcome return to Celtic Park when he brings his newly-promoted Hibernian side to the home of the champions.

Similar to last season, there will be a mid-winter break, with the first league fixture of 2018 being an away game against Partick Thistle on January 24, while the last game of the campaign will be on the weekend of the May 12.
