  • A winning round for Celtic FC Foundation’s Golf Day

A winning round for Celtic FC Foundation’s Golf Day

By: Newsroom Staff on 19 Jun, 2017 10:56

  • RENFREW Golf Club once again played host to another hugely successful Celtic FC Foundation event, as our third annual Golf Day took place on Friday, June 16.

Supporters turned out in their numbers for the opportunity to play alongside a team of ex-Celts, featuring Lisbon Lion Willie Wallace, George McCluskey, Frank McAvennie and Bobby Petta for the prestigious Celtic FC Foundation Golf Day trophy, while raising funds for our award-winning Ability Counts project.

Players were welcomed at Renfrew Golf Club with registration followed by breakfast rolls, before the team of ex-Celts got the tournament underway at the 10th tee with a shotgun start at 10am.

A fantastic day of golf followed as the teams battled it out in a tightly-contested affair. In the end, Tynemouth’s Green and White, led by Jim McGovern, were the eventual winners and took home the Celtic FC Foundation Golf Day trophy.

Following the day’s play, the golfers enjoyed a fantastic three-course lunch before the day was capped off with a Q&A session with some of the former Celts. Fans were entertained and amused as they recalled their time with club, with some memorable anecdotes.

Celtic FC Foundation are delighted to announce that our third annual Golf Day has raised a figure in the region of £10,000 for our Ability Counts project.

Operating since 2011, this immensely popular project is aimed at helping children and young people who may ordinarily be excluded from mainstream activities and need to be given a chance. The project offers children and young people with Down’s Syndrome the opportunity to develop motor skills and team-working skills, through weekly sessions such as football and dance.

Ability Counts also offers weekly activities for children and young people with Autism, which aim to develop communication, co-ordination, self-confidence and social skills through sessions such as football, multi-sports, fun games, soft play and swimming. In addition, we’ve also introduced a new pilot project aimed at individuals with additional support needs, aged 18+.

Celtic FC Foundation CEO Tony Hamilton, said: “I would like to sincerely thank everyone who has taken part in our third annual Golf Day, including our team of ex-Celts.  The Golf Day has once again proved to be a tremendous event, raising invaluable funds for our Ability Counts project.

“I must express my gratitude to Kenny Morrison and the team at Renfrew Golf Club. Yet again they have welcomed us with warm hospitality and ensured that the day ran smoothly as always.

“Thanks must also go to our supporters’ committee, particularly Jim McGinley, who have played a hugely significant role in the planning and organisation of another successful Celtic FC Foundation Golf Day.”
