  • Forster's delight at clean sheet record

Forster's delight at clean sheet record

By: Laura Brannan on 17 May, 2011 10:56

  • LAST weekend’s 4-0 win over Motherwell brought Celtic’s clean sheet tally to 23 league games for the season, beating the tally achieved in 2001/02.

Fraser Forster shares the achievement with Lukasz Zaluska who played in the first two SPL matches, and together they have kept 27 clean sheets in all competitions.

And the Englishman is delighted to enter the Celtic record books.

“We only started paying attention to it in the last couple of weeks,” Forster told this week’s Celtic View. “We don’t really set off at the start of the season with a target of keeping clean sheets, but you want to achieve as many as you can.

“I’m very proud to be a part of it. I equalled Norwich’s last season but to set a new record at a club of this stature is something really special.

“It’s a great achievement for the whole team because everyone’s contributed to it. Everyone does their job and this record is a credit to everyone.”

While Forster has managed to hold on to the No.1 jersey for much of this season, the competition with Lukasz Zaluksa has meant he has had to remain at the top of his game, while the support from his fellow goalkeeper has helped the big Englishman.

“Lukasz played the first two games of the season, did well and kept two clean sheets, so he’s played his part too,” he said.

“All the keepers play their part in training too and it keeps it competitive. We’re always working hard because there’s always someone there waiting to take your place.”

The Englishman also praised the efforts of goalkeeping coach, Stevie Woods, who has worked closely with each of the keepers on a daily basis.

“Woodsy has been brilliant with me and he’s been fantastic all year so a lot of credit has to go to him too,” Forster said. “He’s made a big difference this season. There are some days people need picked up and he couldn’t do anything more for you.

“He’s worked hard for us and always has everything under control, which makes it easier for us to concentrate on the football.”

And for Forster’s favourite game of the season you have to go back to the start of October, ironically in a match when the Hoops conceded a goal, though they ran out 3-1 winners against Hamilton.

“I had a busy 20 minutes at the beginning and the save I made from a header was probably my personal save of the season,” he said.
