New Celtic signing reveals his favoured position

By: Mark Henderson on 16 Jun, 2016 12:29

  • NEW Celtic signing Kristoffer Ajer believes his best position is central midfield but he insists that he will happily fill any role for the Scottish champions.

The talented 18-year-old has already proven he’s a versatile operator at previous employers IK Start, with the Norwegian even deployed up front on a number of occasions.

Ajer featured for the Kristiansand-based side as recently as May 29, and he then spent the start of June on international duty with Norway U19s, managing to get on the scoresheet  in a 2-2 draw with Bulgaria.

And he hopes this will match sharpness will help him hit the ground running at the Hoops once he reports for pre-season duty next Monday (June 20), when new manager Brendan Rodgers puts his charges through their paces for the first time.

Speaking exclusively to the official website, the new Bhoy said: “It’s an advantage that I have been playing football so recently, and I was at an international tournament that went very well, so I feel in good shape. I've had two weeks off as well now so I also feel ready to play football again.

“I had two great years at IK Start and played a lot of games but this season we didn’t perform well as a team and now I’m just looking forward to joining Celtic and to start winning again. Now I am in top shape and ready to perform well in coming to Celtic.

“Brendan will decide where I play, but for me I have played well in the national team in my favoured position which is central midfield or as a deep-lying midfielder,” he continued. "But I will play anywhere I am asked although I feel that is where I am best.”

Ajer officially joined Celtic earlier this week on a four-year deal from IK Start, having penned a pre-contract agreement back in January.

He will jet into Glasgow this weekend to begin the next chapter of his burgeoning career and he’s relishing the challenge of staking a claim for Brendan Rodgers’ side as pre-season gets underway in Slovenia.

“I’m travelling over to Glasgow on Saturday and we are going to look at flats next week,” said Ajer. "My Mum and Dad will join me so they will stay here for one week and then I will go out to Slovenia they will come back.

“I feel really ready. I have trained so hard since I signed for Celtic and now I’m ready to play with some great players and be able to develop here and play some good matches in front of a huge amount of supporters at Celtic Park.”
