Rare Celtic artefacts returned to Paradise

By: Martin Dalziel on 02 Jun, 2016 11:18

  • TWO treasured pieces of Celtic memorabilia have been returned to the club following an auction in Glasgow.

Former Celt Joseph Dodds’ 1910/11 Scottish Cup winner’s medal and a solid gold scaled down replica of the European Cup created to mark Celtic’s historic win in 1967 have found their way back to Paradise after they were sold at McTear’s Works of Art Auction on Tuesday.

Carluke-born Dodds played for the club from 1908 to 1920 over two spells and was considered one of the best and fastest defenders the Celts ever produced but his career was interrupted by the First World War, during which he served in France.

The medal, which was bought by the club at the auction, has a special back story after Joseph presented it to a nurse to thank her for helping his brother James after he was injured in the Quintinshill rail disaster in 1915, which claimed the lives of over 200 people, most of whom were Scottish soldiers heading to Gallipoli.

The replica cup on sale at the auction was also secured for the club by Glasgow businessman, Lord Willie Haughey for £58,000, and Celtic Chief Executive Peter Lawwell told the official club website that it was vital to regain such important artefacts.

“We are delighted to ensure that Joseph’s medal remains part of the club,” he said. “This is such an important item which has a very poignant story behind it and we are pleased that our supporters can now view this at Celtic Park.

“Joseph is someone who gave so much to Celtic, during such a difficult period and to play almost 400 matches for the club and achieve so many honours during this time is such a magnificent achievement.

“He is very deserving of the place he occupies in the club’s proud history.

“We would also like to thank Willie Haughey sincerely for his very kind gesture in relation to the European Cup replica. Again this is a highly sought after and significant piece of football history and we are sure our supporters will be delighted to see this at the stadium.

“Over many years Willie has been a collector of similar important items and has donated these to the club.”

The nine carat commemorative Coupe Des Clubs Champions Europeens donated by Lord Haughey stands at 26cm high and was regarded as one of the star lots in the McTear’s auction.

It has an engraved gold band inscribed with the names of the Lisbon Lions and was commissioned by the club in 1967 and presented to then chairman Bob Kelly.

Lord Haughey told the official Celtic website: “This is an extremely important part of Celtic’s history and right up there with any other piece of memorabilia associated with the club.

“It is too important a piece to be lost to Celtic and as such I have now given it to the club so that it can bring enjoyment to fans for many years to come.”

Commenting on the sale, McTear’s Managing Director, Brian Clements said: “There is no doubt that both the replica trophy and the Joseph Dodds medal are extremely important pieces of Celtic’s footballing heritage and as such we knew that there would be significant interest in the lots.

“There was intense bidding for both items and I am delighted to hear that they will both now be displayed at Celtic Park.”
