Leigh Griffiths named as Scotland's Player of the Year

By: Newsroom Staff on 01 May, 2016 21:10

  • LEIGH Griffiths has been named as Scotland’s Player of the Year tonight, crowning off a stellar season for the Celtic striker.

The Hoops hit-man bagged his 39th goal of the season in yesterday’s 3-1 victory over Hearts, a win that all but secured the champions a fifth successive league title.

The 25-year-old was presented with his prestigious prize at a glittering ceremony in Glasgow, beating off competition from the other three players on the four-man shortlist - Aberdeen winger Jonny Hayes and Dundee duo Kane Hemmings and Greg Stewart.

This latest individual honour for Griffiths comes hot on the heels of his hat-trick of awards at Celtic’s Player of the Year event last week where he won Player of the Year, Players’ Player of the Year and Top Goalscorer.

And he joins fellow Celts Stefan Johansen, Kris Commons, Charlie Mulgrew, Emilio Izaguirre and Scott Brown, who have all picked up Scotland’s Player of the Year in recent years.
